Pro Day: Colorado University

Intro

Da Ft Collins a Boulder il viaggio e` stato facile. Arrivato al campus di CU, il parcheggio questa volta e` toccato a me pagarlo, non un problema. La preoccupazione maggiore era trovare questo nuovo campo indoor, a cui io sicuramente non ero mai stato prima, ma che e` cosi nuovo che praticamente in pochissimi ci sono gia stati prima di oggi.

Fortunatamente dopo aver pagato il parcheggio, proprio mentre cominciavo a cercare un ascensore o qualcosa che mi portasse a questo campo, vedo Morgan Fox, DE di CSU Pueblo (uno dei leader per sacks di tutto il football di D-II), con tanto di calzino a stelle e strisce con un aquila sopra. Chiaramente mi pare un giocatore di football, gli chiedo se sta andando anche lui al Pro Day e lo seguo fuori dal parcheggio.

Pro Day

Arrivato al Pro Day noto subito che i membri dei media sono molti meno qui, e anche gli scout sembrano essere diminuiti. Non e` cosa buona per prospetti come Fox, che sono venuti qui per mettersi in mostra, se solo avessero saputo che CSU aveva più pubblico potevano fare il Pro Day ore prima.

Giusto in quel momento sento uno scout che dice ad un altro, “i giocatori dalle scuole piccole non si allenano fino a dopo le 5” e l’altro che gli risponde, “io allora non riesco a vederli.” Altra brutta notizia per i prospetti da small school.

I primi a partire sono i giocatori di Colorado, un gruppetto piccolo composto da tre giocatori che sono gia stati a Indianapolis per la Combine. Il WR Nelson Spruce, l’OT Stephane Nembot, e il CB Ken Crawley.

Un gruppo molto vario, con Spruce che e` stato uno dei migliori WR della Pac-12 conference gli ultimi due anni, portando a casa 195 reception, 2,251 yard e 16 TD in quel periodo. Ha anche battuto il record per reception da un WR della Pac-12 con 267 in carriera, dopo aver gia battuto i record per reception e yard ricevute nella storia di Colorado.

Nembot invece e` quasi l’esatto opposto, se Spruce e` stato ultra produttivo ma ha limiti di potenziale, Nembot invece e` un ragazzo del Camerun, grezzissimo. Ma e` anche uno dei giocatori più grossi dell’intero draft class, un colosso di 6-6 per 312 lbs, con braccia infinite (345/8 pollici).

Sta ancora imparando, ma molti nella NFL sembrano parecchio intrigati dal suo potenziale notevole che lo renderebbe un LT ideale a livello NFL.

Crawley e` un misto dei due, un ex top recruit, che ha dovuto scegliere Colorado dopo che un tweet stupido gli aveva fatto togliere l’offerte di scuole più grosse come Michigan e Rutgers.

A Colorado Crawley e` diventato il CB più importante della squadra ma ha anche concesso 19 TD in carriera e anche flaggato per ben 12 pass interference negli ultimi due anni. Ha fatto bene nel East-West Shrine game e poi corso benone alla Combine, il suo stock sembra molto in salita.

Gli altri partecipanti sono la Safety Jered Bell, il FB/TE Jordan Murphy, il RB Christian Powell, e il long snapper Wyatt Smith che nessuno conosceva, e quindi ogni volta che faceva un esercizio due o tre scout urlavano il suo nome per far si che tutti sapessero chi era il ragazzo. “Wyyatt! Smiiith!!!!” ogni volta, cosa utile all’inizio, ma col ripetersi della cosa e` diventata persino comica.

Si comincia con le misure, con due dati interessanti. Il primo e` che Spruce pesa 203 lbs, tre in meno di quello che pesava ad Indianapolis fattore che, si e` poi visto, l’ha aiutato molto.

E Nembot invece viene misurato un paio di millimetri più alto di quel che era a Indianapolis, gli scout ci ridono sopra e prendono in giro Nembot e lo scout che l’ha misurato. Tra l’altro essendo il quarto pro day che vedo dal vivo, non ho mai visto cosi tanto interesse e cosi tanto entusiasmo durante le misure, ma quando Nembot viene misurato l’energia del posto era diverso, il potenziale fisco del ragazzo e` notevole, e non e` un modo di dire, se non sei ceco, Nembot e` impossibile non notarlo.

La porzione dei salti e dei pesi non ha portato gran che d’interesse con Spruce e Nembot che hanno scelto di non fare la panca piana, e nessuno che ha entusiasmato coi salti (anche qui i grossi hanno scelto di stare coi numeri fatti ad Indianapolis). Da qui siamo andati nel campo indoor per fare gli esercizi di corsa.

Il riscaldamento qui e` stato intenso, con Spruce su tutti che sembrava determinato a migliorare la 4.69 corsa alla Combine. I miglioramenti si sono visti e come, con tutti i cronometri che l’hanno cronometrato nelle 4.5, col mio cronometro che leggeva 4.51 e certi che l’hanno dato basso fino a correre una 4.50.

Per un giocatore che aveva riportato punt e kick in carriere ed e` visto dal NFL come un possibile slot WR, un tempo più veloce era essenziale. Nembot invece e` stato capace di migliorare la 40 e in tutto il resto, correndo una 5.19 in confronto alla 5.39, corsa poco tempo fa ad Indy.

Da li sono cominciati gli allenamenti per ruolo. Con Nembot che e` partito per primo ed ha lavorato contro un ex OL NFL e di CU Matt McChesney, I due si sono dati battaglia, con Nembot che lo spingeva per 10-20 yard fino al punto di buttarlo quasi contro un paio di fotografi e giornalisti, e scout un paio di volte.

La potenza e la forza di Nembot sono innegabili, e penso che molti scout hanno lasciato Boulder con un opinione molto positiva del ragazzo, sopratutto dopo quei allenamenti pazzi ed intensi.

Da li ha ricevuto palla Nelson Spruce con i due RB, e con Ryan Lindley che lanciava (Lindley e Spruce hanno lo stesso agente, Lindley e` il QB ex Cardinals e di San Diego St, al momento e` un FA di strada).

Spruce ha corso tantissime tracce, molte più di Higgins ad inizio giornata. Ha mostrato buone cose, ricevendo tutto il possibile (con Lindley che l’ha overthown un paio di volte, e Spruce che ha tentato di fare la reception ad una mano.) In generale si e` solo aiutato con questo Pro Day. Cosa che ha ribadito: “Sai oggi…alla combine fai tante cose che non sono esercizi di football, mentre oggi ho potuto concentrarmi di più sul correre tracce e ricevere la palla ed e` quello che faccio meglio, quindi sapevo d’avere la possibilità di mettermi in mostra, ero molto eccitato oggi.”

Spruce ha poi spiegato: “Si, sai, e` un po frustrante che cosi tanta enfasi sia messa sulla 40, perché non e` quello il mio gioco. Non e` cosi che mi smarco, non e` questo che mi ha permesso di avere successo, sono andato ed ho fatto il mio meglio. Una volta che sono in una squadra e posso mostrare che tipo di ricevitore sono penso che e` li che potrò eccellere.”

E` un esperienza unica per Spruce questa, un sogno che potrebbe colmarsi, “E` pazzo, non so, alla Combine e` stata la prima volta che mi sono detto ‘dang ci siamo, questo e` quello che sogno da tutta la vita’ quindi sai e` quasi surreale, ho lavorato duro fino ad ora ed e` questo che continuerò a fare. Qualsiasi cosa accade sarò eccitato.”

Come anticipato Spruce spiega il suo probabile ruolo in NFL, “All’inizio mi stanno proiettando come più un ricevitore interno (nello slot) a questo punto, che a me va benissimo. Gli ho detto…sai interno o esterno io mi sento a mio agio in entrambi ruoli. Veramente dove mi vogliono mi sento a mio agio.”

La dichiarazione più importante su Spruce non l’ha fatta il ricevitore stesso, ma Ken Crawley il compagno e CB che l’ha affrontato più volte in allenamento.

Chiedo a Crawley di darmi il suo scouting report: “E` un grande ricevitore, tanta gente dice che non e` veloce, ma io penso che sia uno dei migliori ricevitori nella nazione. Sai l’ho visto dal vivo, ci ho giocato contro, so la differenza! Ho giocato contro Paul Richardson, e tu sai di Paul…e` un grande ricevitore. Spruce mi ha aperto gli occhi, e lo vorrei sulla mia squadra, perché e` uno che ti può cambiare le partite.”

Spruce ha poi parlato con almeno i Panthers ma c’erano molte altre squadre interessante che stavano osservando da vicino il suo workout (i Saints che avevano mostrato interesse in Higgins stavano guardando molto da vicino per esempio. In aggiunta ai Texans, 49ers ed altri.)

Crawley dall’altra parte ha fatto una giornata abbastanza tranquilla, stando coi numeri di Indianapolis per tante delle discipline. Ha poi fatto con Bell gli allenamenti dei DB, dopo che Spruce e i RB avevano finito di ricevere. Ha mostrato discrete ball skills, e buona agilità e cambio di direzione. Con uno scout dei 49ers che gli ha fatto fare diversi esercizi, lanciandogli anche la palla e testando le ball skills su passaggi un po errati.

Crawley e` un ragazzo sottovalutato, che ha ancora tanto da mostrare. “Mi sento fiducioso, sono fiducioso da tempo. Sai tanta gente stava dicendo che sono questo tipo di persona, inteso sul campo, che non posso ricevere, che ho ricevuto troppe penalità che mi hanno segnato troppi TD…ho ignorato il tutto e so quel che son capace di fare, so di essere un grande giocatore. E` stata un esperienza che mi ha reso umile e che mi ha anche motivato ad andare ancora più duro.”

Dopo un offseason che sta andando bene , gli e` stato chiesto se sta ricevendo più interesse da squadre? “Si sai mi stanno parlando dal Shrine game, ho aperto tanti occhi li, e sto ricevendo molto più interesse.”

La cosa che mi e` piaciuta più di tutte di Crawley e` quando gli ho chiesto se si sente più a suo agio in Press o Off coverage e se squadre lo preferiscono in un ruolo o l’altro?

“Alla combine mi hanno fatto tante domande su che tipo di copertura sono più a mio agio nel giocare, io dico a uomo. Perché voglio che la D-Line possa andare a prendere i loro uomini, e noi dobbiamo solo stare appiccicati in copertura, amo la sfida.”

Crawley e` sicuramente un giocatore a cui non manca sicurezza, ma non è spavaldo o arrogante, lo e` più di necessità. La sua carriera e` a un bilico e sta lottando per giocare ancora un altro paio d’anni al gioco che ama.

Quando gli chiedo com’e` stato il draft process fino ad ora mi dice, “mah sai e` stato un viaggio lungo, – some times I just wish it was over so I could just go and play ball, that’s what I love to do – Fare questi drills mi sembra inutile, pero qualcuno lo deve fare.”

Un ragazzo intelligente e molto perspicace, che ha avuto un percorso difficile sia nell’arrivare a Colorado che nella sua carriera sul campo. Dopo avergli parlato per solo una manciata di minuti sono sicuramente un suo fan, e se riesce a mettere tutto a posto potrà forse sorprendere in NFL, non dovrei dirlo da giornalista, ma da uomo sicuramente ci spero.

L’ultima persona con cui volevo parlare era Nembot, l’uomo che ha intrigato un po` tutti gli scout qui a Boulder. Per una serie di cose non pensavo di farcela, con Nembot che e` stato molto occupato a parlare con scout dopo gli allenamenti.

Osservatori di Tampa Bay, Kansas City e Cincinnati lo hanno intervistato, e a me era anche parso di vedere lo scout dei Panthers che gli parlava. Finalmente si e` liberato, ed e` veramente un personaggio unico.

Cosa che mostra gia dalla prima risposta quando gli viene chiesto com’e` andata oggi: “Come dice Ice Cube ‘today was a good day’ ”.

Poi spiega il senso della sua battuta: “Ho fatto meglio in praticamente tutto, tutti i miei numeri sono migliorati. Ho fatto quel che dovevo fare.”

Più di qualsiasi prospetto con cui parli Nembot e` quello, non che ci crede di meno, ma che non ci vuole credere non ancora.

Per fare capire l’umiltà di Nembot, eccovi un esempio quando il collega Brian Howell (giornalista principale che scrive sul Football di Colorado, e vero signore) gli dice che gli scout con cui ha parlato hanno detto d’aver visto quel che volevano da Nembot, che sono impressionati sia dal fisico che da quello fatto sul campo oggi.

“Come ho detto io non prendo niente per scontato. E` una benedizione essere qui, sentire queste cose mi fa stare bene, mi rende contento, mi fa pensare che c’e` una possibilità.”

Nembot non lo dice come frase scontata, e ripete più volte quanto sia conscio del fatto che non tutti hanno questa opportunità, che sia una benedizione, che non prende niente per scontato. Lo ripete costantemente in gran parte delle sue risposte.

Le origini umili dal Camerun probabilmente hanno tanto a che fare con questo.

Ci racconta come gli sarebbe piaciuto essere il primo del Camerun a giocare in NFL ma che Ndamukong Suh l’ha battuto ad arrivarci. Ci racconta di come non ha detto niente della Combine o del NFL ai suoi genitori ancora in Africa, non gli ha raccontato che ha un agente o che si sta allenando costantemente con allenatori specializzati per cercare di farcela. Gli ha detto semplicemente che cerca lavoro, nient’altro.

Il signor Howell gli chiede: perché? E ci risponde che non vuole illuderli, non vuole dargli speranza quando ancora niente e` garantito. Il senso e` questo.

E anche quando gli chiediamo cosa farebbe se firma un contratto NFL, cosa comprerebbe cosa manderebbe a casa in Camerun? Dice “Probabilmente $2,000 qualcosa cosi, che noi non abbiamo mai visto $2,000.” Racconta di come ha un fratello e una sorella, che vorrebbe portare in America, ma che i sou genitori gli hanno gia detto di non voler venire.

E` un ragazzo coi piedi per terra al momento, ma il problema e` che quando gli scout o gli allenatori o anche certi tifosi o membri dei media vedono Nembot e pensano al suo potenziale i piedi rimango tutt’alto che per terra. Nembot ha tutto quel che serve per essere un buon giocatore. Racconta di come questo e` il suo primo anno dove si è sentito “di giocare veramente a football, dove ho potuto veramente imparare e crescere come giocatore.”

Sta lavorando molto sull’aspetto tecnico e in molti sembrano intrigati. Da tifoso di Colorado, guardandoli sofferente quasi ogni sabato della stagione collegiale ammetto che per me Nembot e` sempre stato un giocatore inaffidabile.

Anche al college si parlava sempre del potenziale infinito, ma poi soprattutto in pass protection era quello che spesso soffriva di più. Ma visto dal vivo posso capire il fascino, posso capire come gente che e` un esperto nel sviluppare OL possa vedere Nembot e pensare di poterlo trasformare in un gran giocatore. Che si avveri o meno chi lo sa e` uno dei grandi punti di domanda di questo draft.

• What kind of feedback did you hear that motivated you coming into today? “Just know today…at the combine you do a lot of non football related, while the drills that I did today are a lot more route running and that’s what I do well, so I knew I’d have a chance to show that, so I was really excited for today.”
• Is it nice to come back here? “Yeah, I mean this is the first time I’ve been in this facility really doing anything and just being back in boulder period, I missed it since I’ve left so it’s been a weird experience.”
• What’s next for you right now? “I’m going to be out here for a couple weeks, just gonna see if any teams wanna work me out here and then as it gets closer to the Draft I’m gonna go back home in Southern California. And then you know just see where I head out.“
• Is it weird working out for something that isn’t even football? “Yeah, it’s an interesting experience you work, train so hard. For me I got two days you know the Combine and today, and now it’s kind of over. So you know I’m glad I got to come out here and show what I can do but at the same time, and now I can kinda focus on more football specific stuff.”
• Honestly, you catch the ball that’s your strength does it kind of go against what you do with all the focus on your 40 time? “Yeah I mean it’s a little bit frustrating that so much emphasis is put on the 40, you know cause that’s not my game that’s not how I get open, that’s not what’s made me successful so I went out there and did the best I could at it. But whenever I end up with a team and get to show what type of receiver I am I think that’s were I;m going to excel.”
• Tell us about the dram of playing NFL football and now getting closer? “It’s been crazy, I don’t know like the combine was the first time I was like ‘dang this is it, what I’ve been dreaming about my whole life’ so you know its almost surreal a little bit, but I’ve worked hard up to this point and that’s what I’m going to continue to do. You know whatever happens I’m going to be excited for it.”
• AS are you getting any responses from NFL teams as far as if they see you as more of a slot or more of an outside WR, more of a possession WR? “I think to start what they’re projecting me as is more of an Inside at this point, which I’m fine with. I told…you know inside or outside I feel comfortable at both. Really wherever they need me.”
• AS you were used as a returner a lot at CU have you heard any questions about that? “Teams have asked me about that, I’ve told them I’ve been a returner for 4 years and I could see myself doing that at the next level.”

Ken Crawley

• your thoughts on things went today? “I think everybody brung their A game, showed up reply well, we just breaking in this new turf it’s kind of new to us. The experience that I’m going through it’s going pretty well I thankful for how the experience is going right now, getting a lot of looks form teams and opening up a lot of eyes so.”
• You ran pretty quick at the combine? “Yeah I feel like I could have ran faster,
• You feeling confident, like you’ve put yourself in a good portion? “Yeah I mean, I’ve been feeling confident. You know people were saying that I’m not this type of person, you know on the field, I can’t catch, I got to many penalties, to many touchdowns scored on me…I just blocked it all out and I know what I can do, I know I’m a great player. It was just a humbling experience and it kind of motivated me to go harder.”
• Are you hearing from a few teams who are interested in you? “I mean yeah, they’ve (teams) have been talking to me since the Shrine game, I opened a lot of eyes down there also so I’ve been getting closer looks.”
• Are you excited about it? “Yeah I’m excited!”
• Are you nervous about the Draft? “I’m not nervous, I’m ready to play at the next level.”
• AS Do you feel more comfortable in off or press coverage right now? “Both!”
• AS are you getting looked at by teams who want to use you more in one versus the other? “I mean at the combine I got a lot of questions about which coverage I feel more comfortable in and I say man. Because I want the D-Line to go get them guys, and we just hold up in coverage I mean I like a challenge so.”
• AS How’s the draft process gone so far, from the Shrine, to the Combine to today, it seems like your stock is steadily rising? “I mean it’s been a long ride, some times I just wish it was over so I could just go and play ball, that’s what I love to do. Doing these drills I feel like it’s pointless, but somebody got to do it.”
• What’s your scouting report of Nelson Spruce? “He’s a great receiver, lot of people say he’s not that fast, but I think he’s one of the top receivers in the country, I mean I’ve seen it, I’ve gone against him. I know the difference! I’ve played against Paul Richardson, which you know about Paul so…he’s a great receiver, he’s opened up eyes for me, and I’d want him on my team because he’s a game changer.”

Stephane Nembot

• Talk about the process here, and just tell us about today? “Like Ice Cube say, it was a good day”
• Why do you think that, why did it go well? “I did better on everything basically all my numbers improved or got better. I did what I was supposed to do.”
• Has it been a fun process? “Yeah, it’s been a fun process. I think at the combine it was a little stressful with all the medical testing we had to do and all that, but it’s part of the process you got to just enjoy it. Because the way I think about it is not everybody was invited to the combine so it’s a privilege you know just to know somebody’s looking at you. So even if you don’t make it at least you know you had a chance. So it’s always something I don’t take for granted. It’s pretty cool.”
• AS What would it mean to come from Camerun and go all the way to the NFL and be taken in the Draft? “It would mean a lot, I wish I was the first one  but I guess Ndamukong Suh beat me to it you know, he’s also from Camerun so you know he plays different position. I play offense line, so I guess I want to be the first OL from Camerun. Just a lot of hard work, belief, trust, you know.”
• Maybe one day two Camerun guys will go at each other? “That’s probably true, that’s probably going to happen. You know it’s just one of those things.”
• “Like coach Mike say, nothing stay the same you either getting better.”
• Was it frustrating or weird not doing football specific drills? “No even at the combine you do football drills.”
• Did you feel like you were able to show more of yourself here today? “Yes sir! It was a good day, I did what I had to do, you know now it’s up to the teams who are in the NFL…I just have to wait for the verdict basically.”
• What have you been working on most? “Technique! I’ve been working with Matt McChesney, I’ve been working on a lot of technique I’ve been working with Lauren Lando on explosiveness. So Lauren Lando took me, you saw my numbers improved today, because of Lauren Lando and my technique and footwork got better because of Matt McChesney.” 
• The scouts I talked to said they saw what they wanted to see from you today, that’s gotta be a good thing, I know they were impressed with you physically but now also with what you did? How’s that make you feel when they come up to talk to you? “Just like I said I don’t take this for granted. It’s a blessing to be here, that makes me feel good, that makes me feel happy, that makes me feel like there’s a chance.”
• The one thing you don’t have is the football experience, do you feel like your improving on that with the things your doing with Mat? “That’s true. Coach Bennati tried his best in the 3 years that he was here to put me as a tackle and teach me as much as he could…So I’m always learning because college is not the NFL, different speed guys are a lot faster and everything. But I’m happy with what I got because everyday I practice wether it’s with coach Bennati or teammates, I’m always taking extra reps. With Matt we’re always working on technique, you know explosion and all that so
• “I feel like I’m getting better and I feel like I’m learning also the game at the same time. Like for example this year the first year were I start redirecting the protection left to right…something I never did since I was a freshman you know. I just wish the knowledge I had now, if I had one more year of college I’d probably would have stayed to just apply it, because this year was really football for me, were I actually got to learn and know things.”
• One of the guys told me that he feels like once you get to the NFL its going to “definitely true, because in college we have a limited amount of time. Because I always try to do extra after practice and there’d be days we’re I’d have to do so much extra on the field that I’d get a little late to class and things like that. So now there’s no school for me, I already graduated since December, so all I got to do is play football you know, there’s nothing else. From 5 to 7 pm that’s all I got to do. That’s your job, that’s your living so…I defiantly feel like I’m getting better. Immagine every day doing the same thing, repetition, repetition, learning, learning, watch tape, study the best way to watch tape. It’ll definitely make you better.”
• You’ve had about 4 months since the end of the season do you feel like you’ve gotten better since then? “I feel like I got better because I’ve spent the whole time working, working out and going through pass protections and stuff like that, so I definitely got better. It’s nothing that I’ll regret about anything…”
